How it works
Enter registration-related charges you have verified locally, in a single selected currency. Separate one-time costs from annual vehicle tax and recurring registration or inspection charges. The calculator does not use a purchase price or calculate sales tax; the existing sales-tax tool handles that separate transaction.
Annual amounts are spread across the chosen months for planning. This is not a schedule of tax bills, renewal dates, refund rights or installment surcharges. Enter a full annual amount that reflects your actual vehicle and payment method. Keep insurance, purchase sales tax and penalties outside this registration budget.
The formula behind the estimate
Every result starts with a defined model and visible assumptions.
One-time charges = selected registration fee + title/documents + inspection + other one-time charges Recurring budget = (verified annual vehicle tax + annual recurring fees) × months ÷ 12 Period budget = one-time charges + recurring budget Average monthly budget = period budget ÷ months
A worked example
A hypothetical registration budget has a one-time fee of 80 and document charges of 20, plus 240 annual vehicle tax and 60 in annual recurring fees. Over 18 months, one-time charges total 100 and recurring costs are 450, giving a total budget of 550 and an average of about 30.56 per month. These are illustrative amounts, not a jurisdiction's tariff.
The sourced UK first-registration option
GOV.UK lists 55 GBP for a non-exempt first registration with DVLA. Previously UK-registered vehicles and specified exempt classes do not pay that particular fee. Choose the exemption option only after confirming eligibility. Neither selection determines vehicle tax or other charges.
An ordinary used-car keeper change is not a new first registration. Use manual mode for charges outside the profile's narrow scope. The UK options require the GBP currency selection; they do not convert that fee to another currency.
Fee verification and maintenance
The fee source was checked on 2026-10-21. BuyUsedAutomobiles is responsible for rechecking it by 2027-01-19. After that review date, the profile stops calculating and asks you to use a manually verified fee until it is refreshed. Its reviewed amount is not a promise that no intervening rule change has occurred.
Annual vehicle-tax bands can depend on vehicle details, first-registration date and payment arrangements. Those amounts remain user-entered. Other countries use manually verified local amounts; selecting a currency does not add a national fee table.
Registration budget versus purchase sales tax
This calculator owns the registration and recurring vehicle-tax budgeting workflow. The sales-tax calculator estimates a taxable purchase using a verified percentage and allowed credits. Do not enter the same registration charge in both tools and then add both totals without removing the duplication. Carry your relevant annual recurring amount into an ownership-cost budget once.
Questions worth asking
Are all registration fees supplied automatically?
No. Manual mode accepts locally verified amounts. The only supplied fee profile is the explicitly scoped UK DVLA first-registration fee.
Does a used car already registered in the UK pay the first-registration fee again?
That particular fee does not apply to a previously UK-registered vehicle. Other document, vehicle-tax or transaction charges can still apply; verify them separately.
Does choosing a UK fee option calculate vehicle tax?
No. Enter the verified annual vehicle-tax amount for your vehicle and payment method separately.
What happens after the fee profile's review date?
The sourced profile stops calculating until reviewed. You can still use manual mode with a fee you verify from the authority.
Is the monthly average my tax payment schedule?
No. It spreads annual amounts for budgeting and includes one-time charges once. Actual billing dates, payment terms, surcharges and refunds are separate.
